There are two main approaches available to those who want translate documents from English to Haitian Creole. One approach is free and immediate, yet it tends to produce inaccurate Haitian Creole translations. The second approach is paid, and it’s performed by actual native Haitian Creole speakers. Consequently, you get more accurate, reliable, and useful translations.

Free Online Translation Tools: But Sometimes Inaccurate Haitian Translations

A short text translated from English to Haitian Creole on translate.com shows several glaring mistakes

There are several online translation tools that offer to translate your texts from English to Haitian Creole, for free. On the surface, the offer seems irresistible. But there is a reason why US-based translation agencies still rely on human beings to perform translations when the stakes are high, when meaning is important.

If your goal is to translate a few words and get a general idea of what an English text might mean, then those automated machine translation tools can be somewhat useful. I will show you below a translation I performed using a very popular online translation website.

Human Editing of Machine Translations Doesn’t Guarantee Better Quality

If you were to type, “translate English to Creole” on Google, translate.com would be among the first results you would see.

In the image above, there are several glaring mistakes in the translation produced using this automated translation tool. Now, they also offer the human approach after you’ve started “translating” your content content with them.

However, at this stage, if you were to get a real Haitian translator to work on your content, this translator might have to agree to work as an editor, at a cheaper price. Now, I don’t know how much they’re offering to their Haitian Creole editors. But if they offer to translate for 7 cents per word. They can’t offer 7 cents per word to their editors.

As an insider and actual translator, I know that profit-hungry and cost-averse translation agencies are inventing all kinds of techniques in order to pay as little as possible to the people who do the actual job of translating your documents.

Being low paid is a demoralizing situation and it leads to low quality work. As a result, the editor will glance at the text and do as little as possible since he’s being paid peanuts by the giant middle-man. Then translate.com can turn around and tell you that although they’ve used their Machine Memories to translate your documents, they also used a human editor (perhaps severely low paid) to review the text.

And the tragedy: your end user, the Haitian community can’t fully understand your text because it was originally a machine translation reviewed by a demoralized, over-worked, underpaid reviewer.

Start with an Experienced Haitian Translator for More Accurate Translations

For those who value accuracy and respect their Haitian-speaking community, the right approach to translating from English to Haitian Creole is to contact an experienced Haitian Creole translator who has devoted years learning the craft, who is bilingual and bicultural, and is willing to go beyond just literal, word-for-word translation.

Since the translator is himself a native Haitian-Creole speaker, he also seeks to help his countrymen and countrywomen by producing accurate, fully useful translations that a Haitian person can read and understand.
