Origin: |
The Haitian Creole word “Berejèn” comes from the Spanish “berenjena”. There is a creolization process of Spanish words in Haitian Creole as well. For example, sandals can also be called “sapat” which would come from the Spanish “zapatos”. The name “Peralte” which is the last name of a Haitian hero (Charlemagne Peralte) who fought against the first US invasion in 1915 seems to come from “Peralta”. A Dominican border city called “Elias Pinas” in Dominican Spanish is usually called “Eliaspin” in Haitian Creole. Another instance is in playing dominoes in Haiti, players would say “de kabès (two heads)” which comes from the Spanish “dos cabezas”, like in “ganar en capicua” |
