How accurate is Translate.com as a Haitian Creole translator? – Evaluation video shows pros and cons by Swans Paul

Translate.com is usually shown on Google as a first option for English to Haitian Creole translations.

However, since Translate.com offers primarily Machine Translations, the average user is unable to actually evaluate the quality of the translations produced by Translate.com for Haitian Creole.

In this video, I go through what to look out for when using Translate.com

Finally, during my 10 years of experience as a Haitian Creole translator, clients have turned to me to “correct” machine translations, similar to those produced by translate.com. Just last week, I turned down such a client because the machine translation was non-sense in several instances.

And using the concept Machine Translations, the client sent me a 6000-word revision project, and they told me it was a 400 word-project. So machine translations platform like Translate.com represent a net loss to the translation market.

1- They tend to produce low quality translations, which can’t be trusted without in-depth human revisions. Sometimes, the translator would have to totally rewrite the translations to make it accurate.

2- But when it’s time to get the human revisions, those Machine Translators offer the lowest rates to the human translators, and thus the quality of the human-reviewed translation is still questionable because most serious human translators refuse to work on low quality machine translations, and have their name attached to the final translation product.

3- In other words, since machine translators tend to offer bottom of the barrel rates to their native translators, they are more likely to end up with low-quality translations because the initial machine translation itself was low quality, and the human reviewer is so underpaid that it’s not worth it to invest hours working for peanuts.
